The town consists of three neighbourhoods: Praia (along the beach), Sítio (an old village, on top of a cliff) and Pederneira (another old village, on a hilltop).
Lately, Nazaré is known the worldwide because of the record waves it has that make it very famous amongst surfers. McNamara broke a world record when in 2013 he surfed a 100ft tall wave.
